If you've ever thought about putting solar on your home, now might be the best time if you live in Colorado. As you probably already know, federal tax incentives, along with state and utility rebates, are making solar installations affordable for everyone. Currently, Xcel Energy is offering a rebate of $1.75 per watt. Here's how the per watt works: every panel that is put on the roof of your home is rated at a certain wattage (ie. 180 watts, 230 watts, etc.). Everyone always asks, How many panels do I need on my home? The answer is a little bit more complex than that as you have to take into account the size of the roof, the direction of the roof face, and how much energy your home uses on a yearly basis. The total number of panels is multiplied by their wattage to determine the system size in either watts or kilowatts. For example, if it is determined that you need a 7.2kW system to zero your bill, your rebate at the current level would be 7200 watts X $1.75 per watt, which would equal a $12,600 rebate.
You've probably noticed a spike in your energy usage during the past 15 days, as your air conditioner has been pumping during this 90 degree heat. Also, since it is summer, Xcel is charging you on the summer tier billing, increasing your energy bill simply because it is warm outside. Photovoltaic solar systems help offset your energy bill, especially in the summer months because before you start using Xcel Energy's power, you will use the power that is being generated from your roof. Until you've used more than what you are producing, your energy bill will be a big, fat zero, allowing you to stay clear of the summer rate tiers.
