Even though every state in the country receives sunlight each day, yes even in upstate New York, there are only a few states that you can associate with being a major player in the solar power industry: California, New Jersey, Arizona, and, more recently, Colorado. California and New Jersey are far and away the US leaders in installed watts, with California accounting for almost 62% of all solar that was installed in 2009. New Jersey came in at 10%. California is an obvious choice for solar, with all of it's sun exposure and it's land mass, it's a no brainer that the country's most populous and largest state would almost need to be the leader. When you think of New Jersey, it is also a state that has a very high population, being the most densely populated state in the Union. What it doesn't have is much land or a lot of sun. Yet, solar still works in Jersey as the state installed over 100MW of solar just last year. This reason alone makes the push for solar in New York that much more appealing. One of Governor Cuomo's campaign points was that he was going to push New York into a much more greener and stable economy and it looks as though he is living up to that promise here in his first year in office.
The Solar Industry Development and Jobs Act is being proposed in Albany and would bring jobs and lots of money for the local economies of New York cities and towns. Solar Renewable Energy Credits, or SRECs, will be given to producers of solar power and all utilities would feel the need to purchase these credits back from the home or business owners producing the power. SRECs are "tradable, non-tangible energy commodities in the United States that represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource". In New York, 24% of all electricity that is pumped into the grid must come from a renewable resource. Sometimes the utilities in states will purchase RECs to make up for a lack of their own produced renewable energy. By 2025, New York will hope to reach it's goal of having 3% of it's power come from solar energy.
Before we reach that point, New York will need to create the jobs needed to sustain a clean economy and an estimated 20,000 jobs will be created because of this act. Utility customers will pay an extra 39 cents each month to fund the act but at the end of the day, everyone will have clean energy.
