While watching the second-to-last episode of Michael Scott's tenure as Regional Manager of Dundler Mifflin Scranton on "The Office" last night (welcome to Colorado, Michael!), I noticed that the NBC peacock logo was donned green. Sure enough, this week is NBC's Earth Week 2011. Every year since 2007, NBCUniversal has celebrated the week before Earth Day with "green-themed content" over it's many cable channels as well as taking green initiatives at most of it's corporate offices, it's theme parks, and during it's productions.
Some of the measures that NBCUniversal has taken to make their facilities and operations more energy efficient:
- At Universal Studios in Orlando, a solar array has been installed that could power close to 1,400 home daily.
- The Weather Channel, which is part of NBCUniversal, received Gold LEED New Construction certification for "it's many innovative approaches", which includes using the heat from studio lights to help heat the building.
- In San Francisco, KNTV-NBC 11 is completely powered by wind energy.
- Most of NBCUniversal's facilities have been outfitted with efficient lighting, including LED lighting beds.
NBCUniversal also implements green measures during productions:
- During the filming of the movie "Paul", the cast was given hybrid cars and the portable restrooms were powered by solar.
- While filming the movie "Hop", the cast and crew prevented 34 tons of material from going to the landfill by practicing composting and recycling on set.
NBC has brought the Green attitude to it's comedy programming as well. If you watch "The Office", you surely remember Dwight's Recyclops character and if you're a "30 Rock" fan, you probably remember the appearances of Al Gore. MSNBC will air a documentary series titled "Future Earth" which will go into detail on the subjects of climate change, endangered species, and energy consumption/alternative power, among other things.
Not only does NBCUniversal preach energy awareness, it "walks the talk". By implementing these green measures, NBC is taking the lead in showing that big corporations can care about the environment, too, while remaining entertaining. Recyclops for life.
